Hiking News For December

December 2021: A Note From Diane

Well, here we are, at the end of 2021.

Can’t say I’m sorry to see this one go. Onward!

PERMITS & RESERVATIONS, OH MY

It’s always smart to check on the paperwork you need when you go exploring.

If you’re planning to head to Zion soon, be aware that hiking permits are now required for Angels Landing.

The NPS will issue permits using online lotteries. January 3, 2022 is the date of your first chance to score a permit.

Glacier National Park will require reservations again in 2022, specifically for the Going-to-the-Sun Road and Bowman Lake.

INTERGENERATIONAL HIKING

Speaking of Glacier National Park, meet hikers Kay Knapton (age 81) and Olivia Secord (age 11) who love hiking there – together.

Trail names: Old Goat and Young Goat, with smiles as bright as the sun.

This duo completed 100,000 steps and 50 miles on Glacier’s trails in August 2021 to raise funds for the Glacier Park Conservancy and climate awareness.

Never let 70 years separate you from the perfect trail buddy!

2022 HOT SPOTS

If you’re a geologist, you’re thinking of lava plumes beneath Earth’s crust rising to the surface and creating drama.

Here, I’m referring to a different kind of hot spot: Leave No Trace’s plans for restoring damaged and abused areas (hot as in “ouch”) around the United States.

Ten locations will receive 5 days of targeted Leave No Trace programs. One former site will receive support again this year to solidify its gains.

Take a peek at where the sites are, and maybe plan to volunteer your time and/or money if there is one near you.

New Year Best Wishes

The year is drawing to a close, such a bittersweet and frustrating span of time.

Let me raise my insulated water bottle filled with piping hot green tea in a virtual toast to the New Year with you.

I smile as I imagine you doing the same for me (although your beverage choice is completely your own business).

May we all have happy trails in the months to come. May we all have what we need to hike them.

Thanks for reading this tiny humble newsletter.

Happy New Year!

Hike on,

Diane a.k.a. Happy Hiker
